Holes

When as a child, while
gazing up at the night sky,
One of my friends told me
(he had seen on TV)
That somewhere, up there
There were huge black holes
Gobbling up every single thing
They could sink their teeth into
And that one day
They’d swallow us as well
Down to the last toenail,
I felt so incredulous,
incredibly insignificant,
vulnerable and alone.
Yet today
the only thing
I can do is
to envy that
unspeakable
thing
