frozen fire

frozen fire lights the sky
flashing faces, amber smiles
hovering above the ground
as fruit ripe for the picking

nothing’s sacred on this night
but everything is holy
a regular rectangle
bluntly flooded with grey white

a washed-out cage sealed with glass
plastered with regulations,
best wishes for the faded
year, walking, haunting these halls

while hopes and resolutions
blossom into steam and smoke
far above, so thin it does
not even sting in the eye

frozen fire
